Online marketing is a great way to gain exposure for your business and is how many business survive these days. Online advertising comes in a variety of ways. Search Engine Marketing (SEM) tops the list. The advantages can be a large audience at a small price combined with a high response ratio.

There are a number of products and services offered online. SEM is usually populare in two big forms: Search engine optimization (SEO) and Pay-Per-Click (PPC) campaigns. When looking for a web marketing vendor, look for experience. This industry involves many opinions, so check to see if your vendor has produced any results.

SEO rankings are what many business rely on for product and service sales. A high ranking for a word (search term) is often a determining factor in the the profitability of a website, regardless of aesthetics. By improving your search term rankings you can gain a quick advantage over competition. The majority of clicks when people search happen in the organic search results. The majority of those clicks start at the top and quickly decrease once you go to page two of the search results.

PPC occupies many of the other clicks. These are the ads usually displayed on the right side of a search page and also on many websites and blogs. You can pay for a number of clicks for a specified search term. You have to continually pay for this when the advertisement account runs dry.

Social mediums have also recently become big. Craigslist, Facebook, Twitter, Digg and many other community platforms are great ways to advertise your website and services.

Affiliate marketing and banner ads are other ways to expand your audience.

White Hat Black Hat

Your web marketing vendor should use all of the techniques in a ‘white hat’ manner. This means the strategies are within moral and ethical guidelines. This is not only because it’s moral and ethical, but ‘black hat’ strategies, which involve ways of cheating the system, may pay for a little while but they are never long-term strategies to pursue. This is true in any field, but especially when you are dealing with search engine marketing.
